In 2022 the Legal Services Corporation issued a report finding that 92% of substantial civil legal problems faced by low-income Americans received inadequate or no legal help. Market-rate legal fees are expensive and often unaffordable for working individuals and families. Although there are community organizations that offer free legal assistance, many people make too much money to qualify, but too little to afford an attorney. Because of this, North Carolina Legal Services offers income-based fee arrangements.
Traditional law firms in North Carolina charge an hourly rate of $300 per hour, with initial consultations costing up to $200 for up to 90 minutes, including legal research. North Carolina Legal Services offers income-based rates ranging from $150-$225 per hour. We also offer a flat-rate half hour consultation for only $50.

$225 /hr

Use the table below to determine the applicable discount for your family size: 1) Find Your Family Size: In the table, locate the row that matches the number of people in your household under the "Family Size" column. This includes yourself, your spouse or partner, and any dependents. 2) Determine Your Income Level: Compare your household's annual income to the income ranges in the table, under the columns "250% Federal Poverty Level," "350% Federal Poverty Level," and "400% Federal Poverty Level." Identify Your Discount: - If your household income is 250% or less of the Federal Poverty Level for your family size, you qualify for a 50% discount ($150/hr rate). - If your income is between 250% and 350% of the Federal Poverty Level, you qualify for a 33% discount ($200/hr rate). - If your income is between 350% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, you qualify for a 25% discount ($225/hr rate). - If your income exceeds 400% of the Federal Poverty Level for your family size, this sliding scale may not apply, and standard rates may be in effect.
Family Size | 250% Federal Poverty Level | 350% Federal Poverty Level | 400% Federal Poverty Level |
